Why do you think that Gerry is so calm durring the storm when Ben expected him to be extremely frightened and crying? How do you suppose that Gerry stays relaxed and stands "being barely six years old, terrified of the water, and believing he was about to be thrown into the worst water he had ever seen in his life?"

I think that he was experiencing shock; he was so frightened that he didn't know how to react to the situation. I've experienced situations like this myself. You don't know what to do with yourself because you don't want to make the situation worse or you're just in complete awe that you're in such great danger that you have no idea how to react.

I think he was so in control and not an emotional wreck during this whole ordeal because he simply had to, and if he did not step up he could have endangered the lives of his brothers and himself. Another reason can be found on page 200: “It’s funny what you’ll do, when you run out of choices.” This quote describes how a person can face and over come his or her worst fears.
